Five Failures Friday

by Rita on September 3, 2010

Since becoming pregnant I have not been able to do all of the things that I want to do so I figured I would create a post about the things I was UNABLE to accomplish this week.  Although five may not be enough at eight months pregnant, my five failures for this week include:

1.  Post a few items on Craigslist that I need to get rid of so I have some extra space.  (Of course, I have been talking about doing this for several months now.)

2.  Sort and redistribute my son’s toys.  I want to change his toys that are upstairs and bring some of them downstairs since he has lost interest in most of the ones downstairs.

3.  Sort or organize any of my son’s old clothes for the new baby.  They just sit in the closet waiting for me in plastic bags not sorted at all.

4.  Have pictures uploaded and printed for my brother.

5.  And the worst of all – mail my mom’s birthday card and gift.  This is especially bad since her birthday was in mid-August.  I know I am a horrible daughter but I think she understands.

I feel so horrible about these failures because I am typically on top of everything but being pregnant, chasing my toddler, and working fulltime has really taken its toll on me.  Ok, I am sleepy now so I am going to do nothing for the rest of the night.  (smiles)

Creating a Facebook Vanity URL

by Rita on September 2, 2010

Now you can create a Facebook vanity URL for your fan page when you have just 25 fans.  Changing your URL makes it easier for people to find you so you can promote your page.

Wouldn’t you prefer:

http://www.facebook.com/your-facebook-page-name

instead of:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/your-facebook-page-name/facebook-id-full-of-numbers

Step One –

Log into your administrator account not your fan page.

Step Two –

Type in the following http://www.facebook.com/username in the address bar.  There will be two options – one for your administrator account (if you haven’t set up a vanity URL for it already) and one for fan pages.  See the illustration below:

Select the drop down arrow for a list of pages that you administer.  Highlight and select the page you want to change.

Step Three –

Type in the name you would like to assign to this page then check its availability.

Please keep the following in mind when selecting your username:

  • Generic words such as flowers or pizza are not available as usernames.   Page administrators are encouraged to create a username that closely matches the true identity of their name or business.
  • You cannot change your username after you have confirmed it, even if you have misspelled it.
  • You can only have one username for page.
  • You cannot transfer ownership of a username to another party.

Step Four –

You will be asked to confirm that you want to use the name you typed as the name for that page.  Confirm your selection and you are finished.  Your new vanity URL will be set.

I just did it for Me as Mom and it is now http://www.facebook.com/measmom.  While you are signed into Facebook you should like Me as Mom and sign up for my Facebook giveaway.

I Hate Captcha

by Rita on September 1, 2010

i hate captchaI comment on a lot of blogs and what I can’t stand about some blogs is the added CAPTCHA protection.  For those of you who don’t know CAPTCHA is, it is that field for you to type in the letters to confirm it isn’t a spam comment.  When leaving comments on someone’s blog it is so frustrating and if you have CAPTCHA enabled I beg you to please disable it.  Some of you may not know that when CAPTCHA is enabled you can actually be losing comments.  There have been several times when I assumed that the comment had been posted only to look again and the comment was just sitting there waiting for me to hit submit again.  I moderate my own comments and honestly it isn’t that difficult.  I have a spam blocker enabled so that helps and it catches most of my spam comments.  I am still new at this so by no means am I an expert but as a frequent blog visitor this is one of my major peeves and I am sure I am not the only one who feels that way.

Calming Tantrums

by Rita on August 31, 2010

I have been lucky from day one that my now 21 month son is very mild mannered.  As an infant, he hardly ever cried and was a true blessing for a first time mom.  As he gets older and is not yet able to fully communicate his frustrations, he sometimes but still rarely has temper tantrums.  When out in public, I know there isn’t much more embarrassing for parents than a temper tantrum.  The main way I try and calm the tantrums is to use distractions.  For shopping, I have purchased a few life saving toys that have clips on them and I attach them to the cart so he can be entertained.  When those don’t work I will distract him by asking him questions like what color, shape, etc.

When eating out, I bring in a little bag of toys for him to play with but typically the restaurant provided crayons and paper work the best.  After that the toys keep his interest long enough for us to eat and leave.  We have had no tantrums in a restaurant so far – thankfully.

While at home, my son gets very frustrated and cries when he is unable to make a toy work the way he wants it to work like cramming a toy that is six times too big into another toy.   Even in this situation I use the distraction technique. Other than the distraction technique I use timeouts for tantrums.  Do you have any other suggestions for dealing with tantrums?

Momma Bear

by Rita on August 25, 2010

bumble beeInteresting day today.  My son got his first bee sting and it happened to be in his ear while he was at the babysitters.  If you can’t tell already I am a paranoid momma and extremely protective.  The babysitter, who NEVER calls, calls me and asks if she can give him some Benadryl because it was swelling.  I tell her I am not sure of the dosage so let me call his NEW doctors office and find out.  I call and they say the nurse isn’t answering but they will mark my message as urgent and have her call me right back.  A half hour later, still no return call so I call back.  The person who answered says she will give her another message to call me.  Then 45 minutes later and I am heading to lunch with no return phone call so I called back again but this time the momma bear came out.

The poor lady who answered the phone got the worst of it especially when she told me the nurse had went to lunch and she would have to ask her to call me when she returned.  I was angry pissed.  I proceeded to tell her that although my son only had a bee sting I wanted to know the amount of medication he could take, if needed.  And how I hope the incompetence of this nurse doesn’t lead to another child not being cared for in time.  The lady on the phone says well that is your doctor’s nurse.  So what I shout.  Then I asked her if she was the only nurse there on staff that I could speak to about medication dosages.  There was more said but you get the point.  For goodness sake, it wasn’t like I was asking for anything too complex.   Of course, after that I was on hold and a different doctor’s nurse was about to pick up.   Finally, I was given the dosage information.

Between phone calls to the doctor’s office, I asked the babysitter to put a baking soda/water paste on the sting to help with the irritation and get the stinger out which she did.  Shortly thereafter, she said the swelling had actually decreased and he seemed fine so I wasn’t too concerned about the actual dosage but more about not being answered timely.   If this were truly a reaction, or if my son was an infant with a high fever, or a thousand other scenarios, it could have turned out a lot worse.  I only recently switched doctors because I heard great things about this huge, prestigious medical group.  I now wish that I had stayed with my more personal medical group who answered your pediatric questions immediately.

Have you had a similar experience where you turned into the protective momma bear?  This is my second time and with all my hormones racing from being pregnant I think it may have been way worse.
